Wedding Dress Silhouettes — Which One Is Right for You?

Wedding Dress Silhouettes — Which One Is Right for You?

Choosing the right wedding dress silhouette is the key to a look in which you feel confident and beautiful. Even the most exquisite lace won't look its best if the cut isn't right for you. In this article we introduce the five main silhouettes you'll find at Areti bridal salon and help you work out which one is yours.

1. The A-line — the universal favourite

The A-line is the most popular choice among brides around the world — and for good reason. Its shape resembles the letter "A": fitted at the shoulders and waist, then flaring softly to the floor.

Why is it so popular?

  • Suits every body type — pear, apple, hourglass or straight
  • Defines the waist, skims the hips and lengthens the silhouette
  • Comfortable to wear and to dance in — it never restricts movement
  • Elegant, yet never overly dramatic

Who is it perfect for?

For absolutely every bride. If you're not sure which silhouette to choose, start with the A-line. At Areti we carry more than 30 A-line styles from every Demetrios collection.

Examples from the collections:

Styles Demetrios 1500 and 1501 are classic A-lines in embroidery and tulle — elegant and easy to wear. See Style 1500 →

2. The Mermaid — for confidence and drama

The mermaid is the silhouette that draws the most attention. It hugs the body closely from the shoulders to the knees, then flares out dramatically — like a mermaid's tail.

Characteristics:

  • Emphasises every curve of the body
  • Creates a feminine, dramatic and alluring silhouette
  • Wonderfully photogenic — perfect for photographs
  • Calls for confidence and good posture

Who is it perfect for?

For brides with an hourglass figure who want to accentuate their curves. Also for tall, slender brides who want to add shape and volume. It isn't the easiest silhouette to dance in, but it is breathtaking for the ceremony.

Examples from the collections:

Demetrios Platinum DP523 is a striking mermaid with pearl embroidery — one of our most sought-after styles. See Style DP523 →

3. The Ball Gown — the fairy-tale classic

The ball gown is the silhouette most girls dream of — a fitted bodice and a full, sumptuous skirt. It makes a spectacular entrance as you walk into the room.

Characteristics:

  • Fitted upper part (usually a corset bodice)
  • A full skirt with multiple layers of tulle or organza
  • Conceals the hips and legs entirely
  • Accentuates the waist and neckline

Who is it perfect for?

For every body type, but especially for fuller-figured brides who want to skim the hips and draw the eye to the upper body. Also for petite brides — the full skirt creates the illusion of height. Ideal for large weddings in hotels, restaurants or churches.

Examples from the collections:

Demetrios 1505, with beaded and shimmering tulle, is a classic ball gown that turns every bride into a star. See Style 1505 →

4. The Column/Sheath — modern minimalism

The column/sheath follows the contours of the body from top to bottom, with no dramatic flare. An elegant, clean and contemporary choice.

Characteristics:

  • Minimalist design with no excess volume
  • Emphasises height and slenderness
  • Comfortable and easy to move in
  • A modern look — perfect for a city wedding

Who is it perfect for?

For tall, slender brides (170 cm and above) who prefer elegant minimalism. Also for brides with an athletic figure — the column adds femininity without volume. Ideal for city weddings, destination weddings and second ceremonies.

5. Boho — freedom and romance

Boho isn't a specific silhouette so much as a philosophy — light fabrics, relaxed cuts, a romantic aesthetic. Boho dresses blend elements of the A-line and the column with their signature effortless elegance.

Characteristics:

  • Light, flowing fabrics — chiffon, crepe, soft lace
  • Floral and botanical motifs
  • Open back, delicate straps, a V-neckline
  • Comfortable and lightweight — perfect for a full day outdoors

Who is it perfect for?

For brides who value freedom and comfort. For outdoor weddings, on the beach, in nature or in a rustic style. Boho dresses don't depend on a particular body type — it's all about the feeling.

How do you find your silhouette?

Our advice is not to limit yourself in advance. Many brides arrive set on a mermaid and fall in love with an A-line — and vice versa. That's why we recommend:

  1. Decide on the style of the wedding (classic, modern, boho)
  2. Think about comfort — will you be dancing a lot? Will you be outdoors?
  3. Don't follow trends alone — your dress should suit you, not Instagram
  4. Book a fitting — try at least one style from each silhouette and let your body and the mirror decide
