How to Choose a Wedding Dress in Sofia — A Guide from Areti
Choosing a wedding dress is one of the few decisions in life where the rule "follow your feeling" is entirely true. But that feeling comes more easily when you know what to expect. Areti has been the official Demetrios representative in Bulgaria since 1992 — three decades, thousands of brides, and one constant observation: women who come prepared find their dress twice as fast.
This is the guide we give our clients before their first fitting.
When to start your search
The ideal time to begin is 6 to 9 months before the wedding. Dresses from the Demetrios collections are made to order — the delivery time is 3–4 months, followed by fitting appointments for alterations. If your date is fixed, do not leave this until the last moment.
Even if the wedding is far off, an initial consultation commits you to nothing — it helps you understand what you like before you make any decision.
How to choose the right silhouette
Many women walk into the salon with a specific idea and leave in love with something different. That is why we recommend trying at least three different lines, even the ones that are "not for you":
- A-line — versatile, defines the waist, easy to move in. Suits almost every figure.
- Mermaid — follows the silhouette to the knee, then flares out. Accentuates your lines and calls for confidence.
- Ball gown — full skirt, fitted bodice. The classic bridal look, good for concealing the hips.
- Column / sheath — clean and modern. Lengthens the silhouette and needs fewer alterations.
- Destination / lightweight dress — for an outdoor wedding or a second dress for the evening.
Our consultants will help you judge which silhouette works for your figure and for the wedding location. The lighting in the church, the terrain at the hotel, whether you will be dancing — all of it shapes the choice.

How a fitting works at Areti
We work by appointment only — we do not take walk-ins. The reason is simple: we want every bride to have a consultant's full attention for her entire visit.
The first consultation is 90 minutes. It includes:
- a conversation about your preferences, wedding date and location
- access to the whole collection — with no limit on the number of dresses you try
- tea, coffee and a relaxed atmosphere
- specific recommendations on silhouette and fabric
You do not need to arrive with a "finished idea". It helps to have 2–3 photos you like — even just so we can understand the direction.
Five mistakes we see all the time
- Too many people at the fitting. Everyone has an opinion. More than 2–3 companions cloud your own judgement. Bring only the people whose opinion you truly trust.
- Buying a smaller size "for motivation". The dress is altered to fit you — not the other way around. The right size looks better even before alterations.
- Starting too late. Three months before the wedding is stressful for everyone. Six months is the comfortable minimum.
- Focusing only on photos. The dress on Instagram has professional lighting and may be pinned at the back with clips. The dress in person is different — better or worse. Only the fitting tells the truth.
- Ignoring the budget. It is better to come in with a clear range from the start. We will find the very best within it.
